Hey everyone, so today I was going through some stuff and realized that our Google Analytics account had no Internet Protocol filters, so we were seeing all the traffic from staff as well as general public. It didn’t surprise me seeing that we had a massive overhaul of the site and some things were bound to get lost, destroyed, hidden forever… whatever! So, with that in mind, I am going to write a brief tutorial on how to add a IP filter to your Analytics account. This tutorial will assume you already have an Google Analytics account. If you do not, then you can create one at the Google Analytics Homepage. Ok, so let’s begin.
1.) First and foremost you are going to want to log in.
2.) If you have multiple accounts, or just one. You want to select “Analytics Settings” link in the top right corner.
3.) This should generate a list of your accounts. If you only have one, it should just show that.
4.) Go to the account you want to exclude your IP from and click “Edit” under the Actions section. This will take you to the profile section of the account.
5.) Scroll down the page to “Filters Applied to Profile” and click “Add Filter”
6.) This is a four part process:
- 1- Check the “Add new filter for profile”
- 2- Name the filter (i.e. Sean’s IP Address)
- 3- You have a couple options here, but for the sake of only excluding the IP I will just say, select “Exclude all traffic from an IP address.“
- 4- Add the IP* in this format “##\.###\.###\.” …you have to put the slashes in front of the periods. (i.e. “63\.212\.171\.”)
*To find your IP- go to What is My IP or run “ipconfig” in Windows*
7.) Click “save changes” and BAM! You are in business.
You can do this to make sure you know the numbers of your site are genuine and not just you and your staff moving around. A small, but overlooked tid bit for all to digest.
