Link Building 101 Part 2

by Sean on April 3, 2009

OK, so if you are reading this one then I will assume that you read part one and you want me to get right into the nitty gritty. Well, have no fear, Sean is going to be your go to guy. Let’s get into it.

So when I left off we had already gone over a bunch of core strategies to a successful link building campaign, or SEO campaign for that matter. Anyway…here are some more ways to get creative and really build an arsenal of quality links:

Social Media and News sites….uh ohhhhh….here we go. This is getting more and more popular. You just have to watch out for the no follow sites. Getting your content on QUALITY social media sites (digg.com, slashdot.org, flickr.com, etc..) can do wonders for your traffic and help rankings. This is just one of those things that you have to get in and do it. Unless you are a ruthless link building ninja it is going to be boring. At least, that is my opinion. Keep doing it and getting your content out there and you will be surprised how much it can make a difference.

OK, This one is kind of a touchy one….shhh….PAID LINKS….yea, I said it. Pay for them! ;-) I think this may border on the blackhat/whitehat SEO agenda (maybe somewhere like gray hat). Well, it can help, sad to say but it is true. Here is the 4-11. Paid advertisement banners and things of that nature are not going to help your rankings (most search engines look down on them, if not penalize you for them). What they will do is increase traffic. If that’s all you care about anyway, go for it. I am also going to throw 2 more paid avenues in here. Let’s face it- reciprocal links are dead…they don’t help…the days of spammy link pages that go from link then discription, link then discription, etc etc is over. This isn’t 1996- sorry. Although 3, 4, even 5 way link exchanges can still do the trick. I will give you an example:

You run site A, John Runs site B and C. John asks you to put a link on site A pointing to site B, in exchange John is going to point site C at site A. Now, maybe search engines have gotten this down, but if you go deep and do a 4-5 way link exchange like this it can help. Just make sure that whatever site John is pointing to your from is relevant to your niche. If he is pointing his blue widget site to your baby diaper site, well, that is worth about as much as what is in the babies diaper. Last but not least on the paid avenue is link directories. Some are free some cost money. There are a couple good ones out there, DMOZ, Yahoo, BOTW, etc.. You will have to dig around and try not to submit your link to 100 of them. Just pick a few that are good and stick with them.

And the final strategy to this Link Building 101 post is….

Cherry Picking Links…ouch!

Yea, yea, yea…get ready for the worst thing in the world. Sit down, and do some serious research.

  • Search for your keyword, look at the first 100 of the sites that come up and punch yourself in the face. You want to get links from as many of those sites as you possibly can. In fact, if you go one deeper- search Google like this “site: highrankingseo.net keyword”. That will help you find the sites that are MOST relevant to your keyword….then you really will be fishing.
  • Use a tool that can help you find the sites that are linking to your competitor. If you can get find and obtain as many as those links as you can, well…then your on your way for being in the top of the SERP‘s. It would also be smart to find a good tool for this, like Hub Finder or SEOmoz.org’s Professional tool kit.

Well, there you have it…it comes down to this- be creative, beg, borrow or steal to get a link on pages that can really help you. Follow all the methods in these two posts and you will be well on your way to a successful link building campaign. I hope and wish everyone has success as long as they aren’t chasing my keywords. ;-)

Thanks!
